Clover Slash Cutter - Art 499
Clover Slash Cutter - Art 499
Slash cutting creates a fluffy mock chenille fabric, created by stacking four to six pieces of cotton, rayon, or silk fabric in a sandwiched layer. Using a sewing machine, the layers are then quilted through on the diagonal with parallel lines 1/4 inch to an 1 inch apart. The slash cutter is then used to slash all but the bottom layer of fabric between the stitching lines. The resulting layered fabric is then machine washed and dried to make the cut edges neatly "bloom" (difficult to describe this final finish but if you can envisage a chenille thread the finish is very similar) Because the stitching and slashing are done on the bias, the edges fluff up in a cushy pile with no ends to unravel and are fantastically soft.

The Slash Cutter works without a cutting mat and is supplied with two inter-changeable guides, one for straight lines and one for curved slash cutting. The rotary cutter has a slender foot that is inserted between two stitching lines above the bottom fabric. The blade then runs along on top of the foot, cutting the upper fabrics. Two types of guides are included to fit the space between the seams for narrow or wide channels. The guide with the longer arm is more suited towards straight line slash cutting and the smaller guide towards curved slash cutting.

See some examples of the finishes that can be acheived with a slash cutter below.
