Why Ott Light Natural Light is good for you

On a rainy day it‘s hard to get out of bed. But, when it‘s clear outside with sunlight streaming through your window you‘re ready to face the day. There‘s more science behind the cause and affect of lighting on our mood and attitude than most people realize. Because our eyes contain 70 percent of our body‘s sense receptors, visual cues are unquestionably the primary way we experience the world. Light plays a big part in how our eyes work. When light passes through your pupils and moves to the retina at the back of the eye, where it is processed by one of two sets of receptor cells, depending on whether you‘re seeing in sunlight or shadow.

This data then travels to the pineal gland at the base of the brain, which uses the information to decide how much melatonin to produce – more if it‘s dark, less if it‘s light. While Melatonin preserves the body‘s circadian rhythm, research shows that high levels are associated with depression. Fewer hours of sunlight during the winter increase melatonin production, creating a wintertime depression called seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Just as decreased sunlight can induce depression, exposure to sunlight can banish the blues – some people with SAD reported feeling less depressed after just a single session of full-spectrum light. Natural daylight is also the best light source for reading, viewing fine details and colour matching.

Most of us conduct our lives in indoor environments – in a car, from the home to the office or even shopping, which diminishes our exposure to natural daylight.

In fact, no amount of ordinary light than can replace the clarity or all the benefits you can get from natural light. The next best thing is simulated natural light by OTT-LITE. Our products include a scientific blend of rare earth phosphors that recreate the illumination of natural daylight indoors. OTT-LITE‘s unique technology is unsurpassed. While others claim to offer a natural light indoors – they are mere imitators of the original natural light science company - OTT-LITE technology.

The colours into which light divides also may affect emotional health. If you‘ve ever looked at a prism, you know that white light, like sunlight, is actually composed of all the colours of the spectrum – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. In colour therapy, specific colours of light are prescribed to stimulate different parts of the brain. Studies suggest that blue light is soothing and can have an analgesic effect. Majorie Hoffman, director and founder of the Institute of American Color therapy in Jamestown, PA, uses blue light to ease joint pain in patients with arthritis. To improve flexibility, Hoffman employs green light, which studies suggest may relax muscles and nerves.

A colour therapist can be hard to find, buy many color therapy techniques are easy to try at home. Wearing a certain color, eating food of different hues, or visualizing a particular color while you meditate are all part of colour therapy.
